Last week I was working on my deer lease. The area is so dry that it looks like a dust bowl. I put up an auto feeder for the deer about 80 yards from my stand. I hope they will get used to it before the season starts.

A couple of years ago some of my Viginia friends and I were hunting in the South Boston area. At that time it was legal to kill a turkey during the early part of the deer season. Not only was it legal but it was the kind of thing you copuld brag about to your buddies if you know what I mean. Well ol' Fred had not killed a turkey ever but he sure wanted to. Now Fred was the kind of guy who did not have the very best of luck if you know what I mean. Well the dogs had not been turned out long before Fred knew he was not in the best of places as usual and he decided to move. Suddenly right in front of him a big turkey suddenly appeared soaring into view. Fred quickly (well quickly fro Fred if you know what I mean) raised his shotgun and fired. The turkey fell to the ground and Fred was excited. He quickly got on the radio to tell everyone he had killed a turkey. The rest of the day Fred showed everyone of us his big turkey. We were all quick to tell Fred that his turkey was a "nice-un". This went on to about dark and it was time for Fred to check that "big bird" in. Finally I could not stand it any longer. I told Fred that he would probably be in trouble if he checked that ugly rascal in. Ye see Fred had killed a turkey all right, a turkey buzzard. Poor old Fred he did not have a clue until I told him the truth.

Went there to still hunt. Drove down a path off the main road and there were dog hunters about every 40 feet with shotguns ready to blast if a deer came into the road. I figured I would turn around but befor I could I came up on this clown who started swinging and pointing his shotgun like a deer was coming out of the woods. This nut then tells me I need to get the "#$#$#" out of there because I am messing up his hunting on this public path on public game lands. hunting on public land is a joke.

After reading an article in the Hickory paper about the wildlife commission dove fields in Catawba county I decided to check them out. I drove down to the town of Catawba and headed east. I found the fields by using the directions provided in the paper. I walked what seemed like a mile to get to the fields. Upon arriving I found a handful of people who like myself spent a couple of hours staring into the empty September sky. The short story is the fields sucked. If the wildlife guys payed someone to work the fields that someone should be fired. The fields had a lot of potential but no effort had been put into them.

I live just inside the city limits of a medium sized city in NC. I was cleaning my boat one evening around dark when much to my surprise I heard a bird gobble in the woods behind my house. Two days later I walked into the area where I had heard the gobbler to see what was going on. I had not gone more than a couple hundred yards before I noticed a couple of gobblers and three hens in an opening about a hundred yards in front of me. I sat down quickly and started to call to the birds. About twenty minutes later I killed the boss gobbler as he strutted about fifteen yards in front of me. What a tasty treat he was.

My partner and I found ourselves on top of the ridge where we heard several birds the evening before. The conditions were perfect. No wind and the temperatures were very mild. The gobblers did not gobble from the roost at all! We never heard a gobble till about 9:30, and it seemed to be about 4 counties over. This day turned out to be another good day for a long walk through the woods.

I set up off of a good ridge and heard a turkey begin to gobble about 15 min. before it started getting daylight. He kept gobbling and as the sky began to get pink I started to call a little. I realized then that I should have moved closer to him while it was still dark because he was a good 200-300 yards away. The gobbler seemed to be responding to my calls but after he flew down he never made another sound?! My dad had practically the same hunt,as did my uncle and some of my other hunting buddies. We all figure that they are still with hens and are not coming to a call good yet.Monday (rain)can't wait to go again!! Good luck to all! God Bless!

Well the day started of slow. Me and 5 of my buddies were hunting that morning and it was 10:00 and no shots were fire. So we met up and stay we were going to have a small deer drive. So we started the deer drive around 11:00am. I was a stander along with 3 others on a big pine thicket. 2 drivers were pushing it out. Their were 19 shots fired that day along with my 5 shots. When the drive was over we went to dragging 7 deer out of the woods. We had came up on a herd of deer. At least 20 other deer escaped the shooting. We came out with 3 does, 5-point, 2 monster 8-pointers and a little spike. I thought when the drive started I was in the worst spot to kill a deer or see a deer. But now I have 2 Big 8-pointers on my wall. They both came within 9 yards of me and that is the best day of hunting in my life. And a day I will never forget.

It's hunting in the fall and fishing in the summer for me. Usually I go down to my Grandpa's privite pond and fish. My favorite type of fish is a catfish because there so big and they always but up a good fight. I don't ever fish for bass though I have cought some on a live worm. This year though I didn't do that much fishing but I did go and I cought a 6 lbs Catfish and a 4 lbs Crappie. Ya they didn't way that much but, that was the biggest catfish I ever cought. I threw them back because maybe 1 day I'll catch one twice as big.

I'm 16 yrs old and I LOVE TO HUNT! In the 2003 deer season I decided to set a goal to kill at least 2 bucks. Well I killed a 4 point buck the 2nd day of deer season. And the whole season passed me by before I got my 2nd buck a little spike 3 days before the season ended. So I decided not to set any more goals because if you don't you want be decipointed if you don't reach it!

12-05-03 I had a great trip to Alleghany CXounty this weekend. I have a small lease there and after working all week I was busting to get up there again. Thursday nights snowstorm had dumped around six inches of the white stuff on my lease and the weather was scheduled to be rough with more snow flurries and wind projected for Saturday morning. I had invited my friend Wayne Starnes to go along and we both nearly froze to death. We had a good time even though no deer were harvested. The snow on the ground made for an unusual experience for Wayne which he seemed to appreciate. Hey , we'll get 'em next time.

My grandfathr and I are avid hunters. About a week ago (which was the opening day of bow season) we decided to head out after school. Well it was'nt long into the hunt, that a couple of boys on skateboards came near our truck. "we could see them from the stand. At that split second, a doe darted from behind the old truck, and right under my stand. It was facing me, so i waited, and waited, and waited. finnialy my pacience payed off; she turned and offered a great shot. I pulled back and heard an alful noise. I had forgotten to wax my bow-string! Off she went with the loudest snorts that I've ever herad. But maybe I'll have better luck next time!

Saturday a week ago I took the time to go on my yearly rabbit hunt with my old friend James Barger and his son Justin. We hunted an old orchard in Alexander County where we had been successful before. My friend Steve Bost went along for the exercise as well. We started about 8 AM and it wasn't long before the dogs were hot on the trail. We jumped 11 rabbits and were lucky enough to kill all eleven. But as always the fellowship and the joy of just being there was the highlight of the trip. I cannot wait till next year.
